It would be fair to say I haven’t followed a traditional path in becoming a full-time author. For starters, I’m from a distinctly working-class background and never attended university. I left school at sixteen with a smattering of GCSEs and to this day, I’ve never attended a creative writing class.
I self-published my first novel in 2016 and at the time of writing (November 2023), I’m about to release my seventeenth. Over that period I’ve sold over 600,000 books and my income this year is likely to be ten times the average for an author in the UK – £10,497, according to The Society of Authors. I say that not to boast but to demonstrate how authors like me are bypassing the gatekeepers of traditional publishing to forge a successful career (in the process, turning down offers from said gatekeepers). If you’re still awake, you can read more about my backstory, here.
If you’re looking to interview an author who isn’t simply trying to plug their latest book and has a different take on the publishing industry, I’d be more than happy to share my views and advice.
