Synopsis
It’s November 1990, and Danny Monk is looking forward to a quiet Christmas. After the turbulent year he’s endured, it’s the least fate owes him.
Alas, fate isn’t in a giving mood.
On an ordinary day in the office, Danny receives a phone call from his brother, Robbie. What unfolds is a tale of woe involving two missed mortgage payments, a letter from a solicitor, and a fourteen-day deadline.
With his own finances strained and Robbie desperate, Danny is forced into a decision he’s not ready to make. It involves a derelict house at the end of an unmade lane, signed over to him by a woman he’d rather forget: Mrs Weller. The same Mrs Weller who warned Danny to stay away from the house.
However, Danny’s needs are greater than his fears, so he invites a colleague to the house with a view to selling it. Unfortunately, that colleague has a curious mind and can’t resist meddling with a safe bolted to the kitchen wall.
From that moment, Danny’s problems are consigned to the past, only to be replaced by a raft of grave problems in the future — a future he and his colleague may never return from.
